A post from Maker Faire Africa blog describes how it works:
- Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates out the hydrogen.
- The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
- This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.
couldn't this just work off water then?

DeleteIf it's like the pee batteries from Japan you can also use saliva, orange juice, cola...I think the point is if you use urine it doesn't cost anything. Can you imagine the cost of running it on OJ?

Yknow what really blows my mind is how many of you all are in the dark..
Surely the amount of energy needed to break the bonds in piss/water through electrolysis would be comparable to that released by the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen during combustion? Factor in inefficiencies of the engine and drag/friction etc. from motion and there would be a net loss of energy...don't quote me though.

DeleteIt is true. All manufactured fuels are net energy loses, but manufactured fuels are not suppose to be energy gains. Think of manufactured fuels like canned foods are to food production. Store excess food production in cans to be consumed throughout the winter or periods of drought. The same theory applies to energy collection, where the canned food is the manufactured fuel meant to be used during times when energy collection cannot be performed. Hydrogen is looked at as the best chemical energy storage, because it does not break down. Of course manufacturing crude oil or coal would do the same thing, but it is much simpler to extract burnt hydrogen from the cycle than it is to extract burnt oil.
